EVENTS AND AWARDS

Purpose of Events
EMD coordinates recurring and special events including the bienniel NASA Environmental and Energy Conference and the NASA Headquarters Earth Day observance. These activities strengthen communication and promote synergy across the Agency's environmental management community, provide opportunities to share innovative risk mitigation measures and best management practices, and increase awareness of across the NASA workforce of the Agency's successes and ongoing challenges in environmental stewardship.

2008 Blue Marble Awards - Call for Nominations (Posted 11/5/07)

NASA HQ EMD is very pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 3nd Annual NASA Environment and Energy Awards. The Office of Infrastructure and Administration will administer the program again this year, and is currently seeking nominations based on excellence demonstrated during Fiscal Year 2007. One individual and one group award may be awarded in three awards categories; 1) NASA Environmental Quality Award, 2) NASA Excellence in Energy and Water Management Award, and 3) NASA Environmental Management Division Director’s Environment and Energy Award. Awardees will receive non-monetary "Blue Marble" Awards as part of the 2008 Environment and Energy Conference in tentatively scheduled for May/June 2008.

Nominations may be submitted by any NASA employee but must be coordinated with the Center Blue Marble Awards Representative and endorsed by the Official-in-Charge. Nominations must be received by January 11, 2008. This program is an opportunity for NASA to raise internal awareness of the important role employees and contractors play, often behind the scenes, in enabling environmentally sound mission success and mitigating environmental risk. It also provides a NASA-wide approach for meeting specific employee recognition requirements in the Greening-the-Government series of Executive Orders. Additionally, the program will enable NASA to increase participation in and potentially gain wider recognition of NASA employee achievements through prestigious external environment and energy award programs.

If you have any questions, please contact Kathleen Callister, NASA Blue Marble Award Program Coordinator at 202-358-1953.

How Events and Awards Support NASA's Mission

Information shared at these events con¬tributes to risk reduction, mission success, and lower environmental liability. The NASA Environment and Energy "Blue Marble" Awards Program provides a NASA-wide incentive for NASA civil service employees and contractor personnel to perform in a highly effective manner in furthering NASA's mission and the Vision for Space Exploration and to assist NASA in carrying out its Federal stewardship responsibilities consistent with numerous Federal policies, laws, and regulations.

Events and Awards Regulatory Drivers
  • Executive Order 13148 requires each federal agency to develop an internal agency-wide awards program to reward and highlight innovative programs and individuals showing outstanding environmental leadership in implementing the order.

Recent Accomplishments & Ongoing Activities
  • The 2006 NASA Environmental & Energy Conference held in Portland, Oregon on June 6-9, 2006 focused on identifying and mitigating environmental risk to mission. The 1st annual NASA Environment and Energy “Blue Marble” Awards were presented at the Conference.
  • A call for nominations underway for the 2nd Annual NASA Environment and Energy “Blue Marble” Awards to be presented at NASA Headquarters on April 22, 2007.
